The Butterfly Kit allows you to get up close and personal in your butterfly observation. The butterfly habitat springs open to its full 9 inch height for observational use and compresses to approximately 1 inch in height for compact storage. The compactable butterfly habitat is constructed with a durable canvas bottom, fine mesh net walls, and a clear vinyl top with secure zipper access. After use, the butterfly habitat can be cleaned and reused over and over again.
A simple, repeatable, 4 step process allows you to observe the incredible transformation of metamorphosis as a tiny wriggling caterpillar grows and transforms into a beautiful butterfly!
- Order your "Painted Lady" caterpillars by fax or mail using the coupon included in your Butterfly Kit. (Allow 2 to 3 weeks for delivery* of your live caterpillars.)
- Your caterpillars will arrive in an observation container containing sufficient food for them to reach maturity. Place the caterpillar observation container in a room temperature environment, out of direct sunlight, and watch as your caterpillars grow, molt, and grow some more!
- Your caterpillars will eventually suspend themselves from the lid of the observation container as each one transforms into a chrysalis.
- Carefully transfer the chrysalis to the screened butterfly habitat where the beautiful butterflies will emerge.
If you desire a more educational experience, for a classroom or home schooling science project, you can gather your own caterpillars and learn even more about the environment and the interdependent ecosystem in which your butterfly/caterpillar lives. (While eggs can be gathered before the caterpillars emerge, it requires sharp eyes to find the tiny eggs and special care to ensure their continued viability.)
- Explore and learn about the specific host plants on which your butterfly lays her eggs and on which the larval caterpillar feeds.
- Teach responsibility as your budding entomologists gather fresh food from the host plants to keep the caterpillars happily feeding.
- Witness the dramatic emergence of the adult butterfly from its confining chrysalis and marvel as it inflates its wings in preparation for flight.
- Enjoy the release of the emerged butterflies back into their natural habitat to continue the life cycle all over again with a new generation.
